A domestic air conditioning installation puts an outdoor condenser unit and one or more indoor units on a sealed refrigerant circuit, with the condensate drained away and the electrical supply provided safely. The installation covers siting both units, running and pressure-testing the refrigerant pipework, evacuating the circuit to remove moisture, charging the system correctly and commissioning it so it reaches and holds the temperatures you set.

Why it matters
What happens when it is done badly, or not at all
The immediate cost of doing nothing is simply endured: broken sleep through hot weeks, rooms that cannot be worked in during the afternoon, and portable units that are noisy, inefficient and block a window. Summers in the South West are increasingly delivering the kind of sustained heat that older UK housing was never designed to shed.
The cost of doing it badly is longer-lasting. An undersized system runs continuously without ever reaching the set temperature, which is both expensive and hard on the compressor. An oversized one cools the air quickly, cycles off and leaves the room clammy, because it never runs long enough to remove humidity. Poorly executed pipework or a circuit that has not been evacuated properly allows moisture into the refrigerant circuit, and that damage accumulates quietly until performance drops away.
Refrigerant is also regulated. Work on these circuits must be carried out by F-Gas certified personnel. Beyond the legal position, a leaking circuit loses its charge, the system stops performing, and the underlying cause has to be found and fixed before it can be recharged: a far larger job than installing it correctly in the first place.
And there are the neighbours. Outdoor condenser units are the part of the installation people forget to think about until after it is running. Siting is a decision worth making carefully at survey.

In detail
Split, multi-split and what shapes the installation
The right system depends on the number of rooms, the fabric of the building and where the outdoor unit can go. Here is what changes.
Single split systems
One indoor unit paired with one outdoor condenser. This is the simplest and most common domestic installation: a bedroom, a home office, a loft conversion or a single hot living space. Pipe runs are short, the survey is straightforward, and the system can usually be installed with minimal disruption. Where only one room is genuinely a problem, a split system is almost always the sensible answer.
Multi-split systems
Several indoor units share one outdoor condenser. This suits houses where two or three bedrooms and perhaps a living room all need cooling, and where there is only one sensible position for an outdoor unit. It requires more planning: pipe runs to each indoor unit have to be routed, and the condenser has to be capable of the combined load. The benefit is one outdoor unit instead of three, which matters both visually and where external space is tight.
Indoor unit types and positioning
Wall-mounted units are the usual domestic choice, compact, efficient and straightforward to service. Position is what makes them comfortable: high on a wall with a clear path across the room, and not directed at the head of a bed or a desk chair. In a room with a single awkward wall, the difference between a good and a poor position is the difference between a system you use constantly and one you switch off.
Pipework, condensate and electrics
Refrigerant pipework needs a route that keeps runs sensible and is made good afterwards, often through a cavity or along an external wall in trunking. Every indoor unit produces condensate that must drain reliably, which is why the drain route is planned at survey rather than improvised. The outdoor unit needs its own protected electrical supply, installed safely.
